The Queen City GINGA Project (QCGP) is an outreach program offering free to low-cost opportunities to learn the art form of capoeira. The program was started when the American Capoeira Foundation noticed there was lack of access to arts and culture in low-income areas of Charlotte. Through partnerships with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Arts & Science Council, and other organizations, the Queen City GINGA Project continues to use Capoeira as a tool not only to improve health but also to build and foster community.
Starting on Thursday, December 1st, CAPOEIRA COMMUNITY CLASSES ARE BACK! Classes will be every Thursday at 6pm at West Charlotte Recreation Center (2401 Kendall Drive Charlotte, NC 28216). Classes are FREE and open to all ages. To register for classes email: info@tacfoundation.org or West Charlotte Recreation activity sign up page found here.
CAPOEIRA SATURDAYS is a class series offered throughout the year for all ages to provide access to the unique art-form of Capoeira. During the series, participants are exposed to the fundamental elements of Capoeira including dance, martial arts, acrobatics, Afro-Brazilian history, and more. Those that consistently participate may see improvements in balance, coordination, rhythm, endurance, flexibility, musicality, self-confidence, and more.
The 2020 and 2021 Capoeira Saturday Series were sponsored by Culture Blocks— a community partnership between ASC, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to bring arts and cultural experiences closer to where residents live. Culture Blocks is funded by Mecklenburg County.
More details about classes and locations will be posted soon!
